HARD GROUND ETCHING AND AQUATINT

A three-day workshop in hard ground etching combined with aquatint on a single copper plate under the guidance of Printer's Proofs Master Printer Kell Johan Frimor.

The course is aimed at all levels and is based on the individual participant's experience in etching.


What can you expect from the course:

• An introduction to the techniques as well as materials, paper and tools.

• A tutorial on the preparatory work on the copper plate.

• Step by step guide to degreasing of the copper plate.

• A guide on the use and application of hard ground and covering the back of the plate before etching.

• Step-by-step instructions on how to transfer a drawing to the copper plate.

• Instructions on the use of the different etching needles and alternative drawing tools.

• Guidance for dusting aquatint on plates

• Step-by-step tutorial guidelines to the use of an aquatint box. Learn what is pepper-pot aquatint, splatter aquatint, spray paint aquatint, airbrush aquatint and liquid aquatint.

• A Step-by-step tutorial to an aquatint test strip / or Etching Key / Step Biting for use in future projects.

• Stopping - Out; a Step-by-Step tutorial on Markers, Paint Pens and Litho Crayons.

• A tutorial on how to work with an aquatint plate once the etching is completed. Learn how to create perfect edges.

• Learn how to prepare an aquatint plate for printing

• A Step-by-Step tutorial on work with intaglio inks and printing aquatint copper plates with colours with insights on oxidation process (colour oxide).

• A tutorial on effective inking methods as well as different plate wiping methods and alternative wiping methods and their uses.

• A tutorial on the preparation of the printmaking paper for printing and on handling damp paper when printing.


Course information:

Before the start of the course, a material package containing a copper plate (24 x 18 cm),tarlatan and paper can be purchased.

Etching needles and brushes can be borrowed at the workshop.


Date: May 18 -20, 2026. Classes are held all three days from 10 am to 4 pm.
